Ghanaians In The Diaspora Donate Massively And Show Support For Mahama’s Campaign

Ghanaians in the Diaspora have shown solidarity with the National Democratic Congress and their flag-bearer for the 2024 General Elections, former President John Dramani Mahama.

At a multi-pronged event, consisting of a conference and dinner/fundraiser, Ghanaians living in the United States converged in Chicago to give a rousing welcome to the former president and to host him at the landmark event.

Speaking at the conference, the Chicago chapter chairman of the National Democratic Congress, Dr. Mark Kutame said the NDC wins power to empower Ghanaians whereas the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) seeks to win power to pursue their own parochial agendas. He said this is why they have found it necessary to throw their support behind the former President in his bid to recapture power.

“The real reason the NDC wins elections is a very perfectly simple reason. Because the NDC gives the Ghanaian people the kind of government they want” he told the audience.

He said the NPP has stacked lots of stolen money as well as placed their people in positions of authority in a bid to rig the next election, but the NDC is very alert this time around and has the remedy for these ‘strategies’.

They have lots of stolen money, and they have put people in positions of power; the EC and the Supreme Court to steal the next election”, he said.

The Chairperson of NDC-USA, Maame Aba Dadzie said she is counting on Ghanaians to see through the tricks of the NPP and vote against them despite the amount of money they intend to throw into the election.

“I believe Ghanaians are smarter this time around and will not allow the NPP to deceive us again”, she said.

General Secretary Fiifi Kwettey admonished the party faithful to be inspired by the millions of people who get no direct benefits when the party wins power but still do everything to ensure their victory.

“If there is any group in this party that inspires me, more than anything it is the millions of our supporters, many of who have never even gotten one penny from the party, … but every single morning they wake up with the hope and the dream that the NDC will come back to power” he said.

He said the party leadership has to lead the charge when it comes to trustworthiness so that their polling agents will follow suit.

Introducing the former President to address the conference, Communications Director of the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi said it has become imperative for Ghanaians to rally behind former President Mahama as he seeks to rescue the country from the throes of hardship imposed on the country by the “inept, hopeless, reckless, incompetent, wicked, insensitive, corrupt and nepotistic Akufo Addo government“. He said former President Mahama has not only been chosen by God but has also gone through the mill and garnered the experience to lead Ghana in a time like this.

“This man has not only been chosen by God but has been trained and prepared through difficult and good times for a time such as this” , he said.

Addressing the conference, former President Mahama charged the leadership of NDC-USA to eschew petty bickering and infighting and bond together for the common purpose of helping the party wrestle power from the NPP. He said he has more confidence in his national executive and the party’s campaign machinery to execute an effective campaign and guard the party’s vote come 2024. He added that the NPP is eager to force Vice President Bawumia on Ghanaians to cover up their corruption but the NDC is determined not to make that happen.

“They are eager to see the Vice President elected in order that he can cover their backs. Ghanaians must look at the score card and hold them to account. The only way they can be held accountable is for them to leave office” he told a cheering audience.

Later at the dinner/fundraiser held at the Penthouse suite of the Staybridge Suites in Rosemont, Chicago, members and sympathizers of the party donated massively in support of the campaign.

MJ Lawal, a Ghanaian banker and financial consultant from Virginia bought a portrait of the former President for $10,000. Others paid varying sums averaging $5000 for versions of the portrait. Chapters of the party from different states within the United States also pledged various sums and other logistics towards former President Mahama’s 2024 campaign.
