Presidential hopeful Alan Kyeremanten’s speech of intent for running for the flag-bearer position in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to contest the 2024  was basically meant for party faithful. This is according to Fellow at the Center For Democratic Development (CDD), Dr. John Osae Kwapong.

Speaking to Kwesi E. Baako on the Gh MixMixx Show on the Ghnewsnow channel,  Dr. Kwapong said even though some of the things Mr. Kyeremanten said in his statement may not sound appealing as campaign messages to the general populace, they seem to have been crafted for the ears of the NPP delegates.

“But also think about it from this other perspective, the people who are going to vote for him in the Primaries are NPP people, right, if you look at who constitutes the delegates for the flabearership race… I’m sure there’s quite a chunk of them who are also dedicated to President Nana Akufo Addo … and would want the party to be cast in a very positive light” he said.

He said it seems almost unimaginable for Mr. Kyeremanten to have come out to say or to suggest that the NPP under President Akufo Addo has failed and thus he was dissociating himself from this regime and seeking to chart a completely new course.

“He’s sticking with the party narrative, right, and the party narrative has been, agree or disagree, the government has been very consistent in explaining why we are in difficulties no matter the evidence that is thrown back, the no matter the counter arguments, no matter the counter narratives they’ve been very consistent…” he said responding to why he thinks Mr. Kyeremanten is still seeking to espouse the virtues of this government rather than chart a course all his own; citing COVID 19 and the Russia Ukraine War as the major reasons for the government’s sub-standard performance.

Dr. Osae Kwapong siad he thinks Mr. Kyeremanten will have a slightly different posture if and after he wins the party’s mandate.

“Let’s say he secures the nomination and he moves into the general election, sure, then that one he has a little more room to quote unquote throw the government under the bus”.

He said even if Mr. Kyeremanten was to do that, he stood the danger of being perceived as disloyal to is party  by the potential delegates who would grant him the party’s mandate to run for 2024.
