Dr Oppong Wadie says President John Dramani Mahama has adopted a reconciliatory approach towards the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) amid the bloc’s breakaway from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Speaking on iKulcha TV and Radio Kulcha, Dr Wadie said Ghana’s posture under President Mahama reflects the need for dialogue and constructive engagement as West Africa navigates changing regional relationships.
The AES comprises Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, three countries that formally withdrew from ECOWAS in January 2025. Their departure has raised questions about the future of regional cooperation and integration in West Africa.
Dr Wadie’s comments come as President Mahama continues to engage on regional and international issues. In a separate appearance on iKulcha TV and Radio Kulcha, Dr Wadie recently said Mahama’s international engagements demonstrate that Ghana continues to have a place in the wider global community.
According to Dr Wadie, maintaining channels of communication with countries within the AES could help preserve regional dialogue despite the political differences that have emerged between the Sahel bloc and ECOWAS.
His remarks underline the importance of diplomacy and engagement as West African states seek to manage the changing political and institutional landscape following the ECOWAS breakaway.
