The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, has assured families displaced by the recent fire outbreak at the Police Barracks opposite the Greater Accra Regional Police Headquarters in Accra Central that government will provide immediate assistance, including temporary accommodation and relief items, while plans are underway to reconstruct the affected facility.
The assurance was given during the minister’s visit to the scene on Thursday, June 4, following the devastating fire that displaced several families and destroyed numerous properties.
He was accompanied by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the Chief Fire Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service. The visit was intended to assess the extent of the damage, engage with affected residents, and gather firsthand information on the challenges they are facing in the aftermath of the incident.
Addressing the victims, Mr. Muntaka expressed his sympathy and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting those affected during the recovery process.
“The purpose of the visit was to assess the situation firsthand, interact with affected residents, and reassure them of the government’s commitment to helping them through this difficult period. I informed the displaced families that arrangements are being made to secure temporary accommodation while plans for the reconstruction of the barracks are being finalized,” he stated in a Facebook post.
He added that victims would also receive cash support, clothing, and other relief items through the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).
The fire, which swept through parts of the police barracks, displaced several households and caused significant damage to personal belongings and property. Although emergency response teams were able to bring the blaze under control, many residents lost valuable possessions and now face the challenge of rebuilding their lives.
As part of his visit, the Interior Minister also called on a police officer who sustained injuries during the incident and is currently receiving treatment at the Police Hospital.
