Media personality Kwesi E. Baako has called for a broader public discussion on marijuana laws, questioning the stark differences in how cannabis is treated across the world.
Speaking on his iKulcha TV and Radio Kulcha show, Baako asked why individuals can face the death penalty for marijuana possession in some jurisdictions while the same substance is legally sold in licensed stores for medicinal purposes in others.
“How does someone have to die because of possession of marijuana, meanwhile in other jurisdictions it is sold at stores for medicinal purposes? It’s about time we have a common-sense discussion about it,” he said.
His remarks add to the ongoing global debate over cannabis policy, as more countries review their laws in light of changing medical research, public opinion, and criminal justice concerns. While some governments continue to enforce strict penalties for cannabis-related offenses, others have legalized its medical use and, in some cases, recreational use under regulated frameworks.
Baako’s comments have sparked renewed conversation about whether existing marijuana laws remain appropriate and whether policymakers should re-examine penalties associated with cannabis possession.
