Member of Parliament for Wa, Hon. Peter Lanchene Toobu, has called for increased government investment in Ghana’s prison system, arguing that correctional facilities remain severely overcrowded and underfunded.
Speaking during a discussion on community service sentencing on iKulcha TV and Radio Kulcha with host Kwesi E. Baako, the lawmaker said Ghana’s prisons are struggling with congestion, making it necessary to explore alternative sentencing options for minor offences.
“Our prisons need proper funding. They are too congested,” Hon. Toobu stated, emphasizing that community service sentencing could help reduce pressure on correctional facilities while promoting rehabilitation and accountability for non-violent offenders.
The discussion highlighted the growing national conversation on justice sector reforms, with proponents of community service arguing that it offers a practical alternative to custodial sentences, reduces prison overcrowding, and supports the reintegration of offenders into society.
