Ghanaian footwear manufacturers have raised concerns over the growing influx of Chinese-made shoes into the local market, warning that the development is threatening the survival of the domestic footwear industry.

Footwear manufacturer Gilbert Akwasi Ntim lamented the situation during an interview on iKulcha TV and Radio Kulcha with Kwesi E Baako, saying local shoe makers are struggling to compete with imported footwear.

According to him, the high cost of doing business, coupled with import-related challenges, is putting significant pressure on local manufacturers and could lead to job losses if urgent measures are not taken.

He further disclosed that footwear manufacturers are threatening industrial action over concerns about import duties, which they believe are affecting their ability to remain competitive.

The manufacturers are therefore calling on the government to review policies affecting the footwear industry and introduce measures that will protect and support local producers.

They argue that strengthening local footwear manufacturing will not only protect jobs but also help promote Ghanaian-made products and reduce dependence on imported shoes.
