Renowned respiratory health expert Dr. Victor Wutor has made a powerful case for why asthma should receive the same level of attention and urgency as cancer.
Speaking with Kwesi E. Baako, he highlighted that widespread misconceptions and lack of awareness surrounding asthma, Dr. Wutor stressed that while asthma may not always appear as life-threatening as cancer, its long-term impact on quality of life, productivity, and even mortality should not be underestimated.
He emphasized that the tragedy lies not in the existence of asthma, but in the fact that many cases remain undiagnosed or poorly managed, often due to limited healthcare access, cultural stigmas, or a general underestimation of the disease’s seriousness.
Drawing a comparison to cancer, Dr. Wutor argued that while cancer rightly commands public attention, resources, and advocacy, asthma remains in the shadows despite affecting over 300 million people globally.
According to Dr. Wutor, with the right diagnosis and consistent treatment, including the use of inhalers, avoidance of known triggers, and patient education, asthma is a highly manageable disease.
He called on policymakers, healthcare professionals, and media platforms to amplify awareness campaigns and make asthma care a public health priority.
