The government of Ghana has scored high marks for its support in the fight against HIV-AIDS. According to the Director General of the Ghana AIDS Commission, Dr. Angela El Adas, even though there are still some holes to block, the John Mahama-led government has been very proactive in the area of providing funding and the right structure of leadership for the fight against the deadly pandemic.

“In the last five years, that is, within the lifespan of the last strategic plan, we have seen a lot of commitment from government.” she said.

Dr. El Adas was addressing a select group of representatives from the Ghanaian community in New York as part of a massive drive to source funding to support government’s efforts. She said the new global paradigm for tackling funding for AIDS related activities has changed to a module where governments are expected to supply the bulk of funding rather than rely on external donors. Ghana, she said, has taken up the challenge very well and is on course to achieveing or at least getting close to its set targets in the reduction of HIV-AIDS.

“Ghana is cited as one of the good examples where we have high level of advocacy from our political leadership, from our traditional leadership, from our religious leadership”  Dr. El Adas said.

She went on to ask for an integrated approach from the diaspora to support the efforts of government and the commission.

The meeting was attended by representatives of various Ghanaian groups including the National Council of Ghanaian Associations (NCOGA-USA).
