The Rastafari Council, Ghana has met with outspoken radio presenter and musician Blakk Rasta to discuss the issue of decriminalizing the use marijuana and his appearance before the Parliament. The Vice President of the Council Mervin Palmer aka Ras Aswad Nana Nkrabeah who chaired the meeting said the decision to have the meeting with Blakk Rasta is to address some matters arising from his appearance before Parliament.
According to Blakk Rasta his invitation and appearance before Parliament gave him insights on how to handle the campaign for the decriminalization of the herb. He indicated that based on advice from his lawyer, he handled the situation which was delicate quite well.
The meeting considered the various options open for the Council to pursue the decriminalization agenda which includes petitioning Parliament or go to court to seek a legal ruling based on the medicinal and economic benefits the nation could gain from the decriminalization. The Rastas agreed that it is essential to have the appropriate measures in place to regulate the cultivation, trade and use of the herb.
The Executive Secretary of the Narcotics Board Yaw Akrasi Sarpong last year called for the legalization of marijuana basing his call on the economic and other benefits of marijuana. Currently hair cream and other cosmetics made from marijuana are openly displayed and sold over the counter all over the country. Present at the meeting was a cross section of Rastafarians including musicians, craftsmen and businessmen.
