General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Johnson Asiedu Nketia has described as “fraudulent” and “frivolous” claims by the opposition New Patriotic Party(NPP) that Ghana’s voters’ register is bloated.

According to him, NPP’s claim bore the same semblance to their calls prior to the filing of a petition against results of the 2012 presidential elections.

“[NPP’s claim is as] fraudulent and frivolous as the Supreme Court case,” Mr Asiedu Nketia stated at a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, August 19.

NPP on Tuesday, August 18 submitted a petition to the Electoral Commission of Ghana over concerns that the current voters’ register has at least 76,286 names of foreign nationals in it.

The largest opposition party claims this was discovered 10 per cent into an investigation conducted by a team.

But NDC’s General Secretary – popularly called General Mosquito – said NPP’s latest call is only indicative of what will befall them in the 2016 elections.

“They know that they are about to lose the 2016 elections, which will be the third loss of a political party in a row,” he said.

Mr Asiedu Nketia admitted, however, that Ghana’s register is flawed, a concession which all political parties prior to the 2012 elections made, he adds.

The former Member of Parliament said Ghana’s voter register, however, has been replaced every 10 years.

The first, according to him, was conducted in 2002 after 1992 with the recent one in 2012.

“If we are going by the same principle, the earliest time that this register should be replaced should be 2022.”

Mr Asiedu Nketia added: “In between that period, there is an opportunity to do limited registration.”

Separately, the Commission has scheduled an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) for Friday, August 21 to thrash out issues to do with electoral reforms including the latest claim by the NPP.
