Today, top music (Hip Hop) and cultural legends thronged City Hall to mark the occasion and announce plans to celebrate the main thing in style.

To celebrate, Mayor Eric L. Adams announced a year-long celebration next year in partnership with the Universal Hip-Hop Museum. There will be 12 months of activities highlighting fifty years of hip-hop music and its attendant cultural influence and significance.

The Universal Hip-Hop Museum in the Bronx, the birthplace of the genre, is slated to officially open to the public in 2024. Educational facilities, including libraries, will also be involved in the 50th anniversary celebration

Paying tribute to the originators, Mayor Adams paid glowing tribute to the “Legends” and pioneers of the art.

“When these brothers and sisters were starting this amazing genre of music no one wanted it… it was denied, it was bastardized, you could not see it anywhere; and it was even criminalized… but they pushed ahead; they were just bold enough to be true to their art and their craft” Mayor Adams said.

‘Hip Hip is 50’, as the celebration is tagged, is set to raise $50m through a series of activities and strategies. Mayor Adams announced that the monies are intended to go to the legends who curated the art form.

“We are looking at the economics of Hip Hop and we are saying to the legends, you have a right; that you invested in something so now you should receive the equity that came from your investment”.
