UK-based Ghanaian educator Teacher Kantanka has called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) to urgently introduce Pedagogy as a core component of the country’s educational system.
Speaking in an interview with Kwesi E Baako on iKulcha TV, Teacher Kantanka stressed that the absence of structured pedagogical training in schools is a major gap affecting teaching and learning outcomes across the country.
Pedagogy, which refers to the method and practice of teaching, is a foundational element in educational systems in countries like the UK, where Teacher Kantanka currently teaches. He emphasized that without proper pedagogical training, even the most knowledgeable teachers struggle to deliver lessons in ways that engage students and foster understanding.
According to him, many Ghanaian teachers rely on outdated methods, focusing heavily on rote learning and memorization, rather than interactive, student-centered approaches that encourage critical thinking and creativity.
He urged education stakeholders and policy makers to introduce pedagogical courses at the teacher training level and to provide continuous professional development for in-service teachers.
His comments have sparked fresh debate about the future of Ghana’s education system and the urgent reforms needed to raise the quality of teaching nationwide.
