Former Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahen, has questioned what he describes as the unfair blame being placed on former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the challenges facing the Akufo-Addo administration.

Speaking on Ikulcha Radio/TV in an interview with veteran journalist Kwesi E. Baako, Obiri Boahen argued that it is misplaced to hold Dr. Bawumia solely responsible for decisions and outcomes of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s government.

According to Obiri Boahen, Ghana’s governance structure makes the President the final authority on policy direction and implementation. He stressed that while Bawumia plays an important advisory role, he does not wield executive power to independently make decisions that have led to the country’s current economic and governance challenges.

He further stated that critics deliberately target Dr. Bawumia for political convenience, especially as the former vice president positions himself for higher responsibility within the NPP. Obiri Boahen maintained that Dr. Bawumia has consistently demonstrated competence and innovation in areas assigned to him, particularly in digitalization and economic policy advocacy that makes the best candidate to lead the NPP in the 2028 elections.

The outspoken lawyer therefore called on the public to be fair and objective in their assessments, insisting that accountability must be placed where it truly belongs.
