Former Ghana Deputy Minister of Defence, Major Derrick Oduro, has explained that the primary role of United Nations peacekeepers is to maintain peace while avoiding direct military confrontation.
His comments come in the wake of reports that some Ghanaian soldiers serving on a peacekeeping mission in Lebanon were recently injured.
Speaking on iKulcha TV and Radio Kulcha, Major Oduro stated that UN peacekeeping operations are designed mainly for monitoring, stabilizing conflict areas, and protecting civilians rather than engaging in active combat.
According to him, peacekeepers are deployed to help maintain ceasefires, support humanitarian efforts, and create conditions for lasting peace, which requires them to avoid direct confrontations whenever possible.
He noted that while peacekeepers are trained to defend themselves when necessary, their mandate generally prioritizes conflict prevention and de-escalation.
Major Oduro also commended the dedication and professionalism of Ghanaian troops serving in international peacekeeping missions, stressing that their contribution continues to enhance Ghana’s reputation on the global stage.
