Lawyer Kwame Adofo, has described the basis for Justice Torkorno’s dismissal as “very weak” and potentially dangerous for judicial integrity.
Speaking in an interview Kwesi E. Baako on Radio Kulcha, Lawyer Adofo criticized the grounds on which Justice Torkorno was removed, calling it “a troubling precedent” and warning that it could undermine public trust in the judiciary.
According to official reports, one of the central grounds cited for Justice Torkorno’s removal was her decision to accompany her spouse on international travel during an ongoing legal term. However, Lawyer Adofo argues that this reason fails to meet the constitutional threshold for such a drastic action.
“If the basis of her removal is simply that she traveled with her husband, then we are setting a very dangerous precedent. Judges are human beings too; they have families and personal lives,” Adofo stated.
He added that unless the trip had a direct and adverse impact on the delivery of justice or demonstrated a clear dereliction of duty, such a reason should not form the basis for removing a justice from the apex court.
Adofo expressed deep concern that the ease with which Justice Torkorno was removed sends a message that Supreme Court judges are now vulnerable to political pressure. He warned that this development could have a chilling effect on the bench, with judges fearing retaliation for rulings that displease the executive or other political interests.
The senior lawyer also cautioned against what he termed “executive overreach,” urging constitutional bodies and civil society to rise up in defense of judicial autonomy.
The removal has divided public opinion. While some support the move, citing alleged prior misconduct and poor communication with the Judicial Council, others share Adofo’s view that the grounds are flimsy and appear politically motivated.
