President John Mahama has announced that government will soon set up the 24-Hour Authority, a major step toward the full implementation of the 24-hour economy policy. The Authority will oversee the registration of businesses that opt into the initiative and outline the incentives available to support their operations.
The President disclosed this on Thursday, January 8, during a visit to the Ghana Publishing Company, where he praised management for taking proactive steps, including the introduction of a two-shift system ahead of the policy’s rollout.
President Mahama explained that the committee responsible for reviewing the 24-hour economy framework has completed its assignment and will soon submit its report to Parliament. This, he said, will clear the way for the establishment of the 24-Hour Authority.
“I’m pleased that the committee has completed its work and that the report will be laid before Parliament to enable the creation of the 24-Hour Authority. This will allow for implementation and the registration of businesses that will participate in the 24-hour economy,” he stated.
He added that the Authority will clearly define the incentives for participating businesses, noting that early adopters like the Ghana Publishing Company are well positioned to benefit from the initiative.
The President also welcomed the sector minister’s efforts to engage the Ministers of Education and Finance to secure a significant share of government textbook and learning material contracts for the Ghana Publishing Company. He noted that increased revenue from such contracts would support the company’s ongoing retooling and expansion.
President Mahama urged the management of the Ghana Publishing Company to formally sign onto the 24-hour economy initiative once the Authority is operational, expressing optimism that the policy will enhance productivity, strengthen state-owned enterprises, and contribute to wider economic transformation.
