Speaking on Ikulcha Radio & TV with Kwesi E. Baako, New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart Obiri Boahen defended the party’s decision to discipline Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng over what he described as denigrating comments against the party.
According to Obiri Boahen, the NPP is simply enforcing its internal rules and regulations, which every member agrees to uphold. He stressed that no political party can function effectively if members are allowed to publicly undermine its leadership and structures without consequences. “This is the rules working,” he stated, questioning why individuals outside the party are troubled by an internal disciplinary process.
Obiri Boahen argued that discipline is essential for unity and survival in any serious political organization.
He noted that Frimpong-Boateng’s stature and past contributions to the party do not place him above its constitution. In his view, applying sanctions demonstrates that the NPP believes in equality before its rules, regardless of one’s status.
He further criticized commentators and political opponents who, he said, are exploiting the issue for propaganda. “What is the problem of those outside the party?” Obiri Boahen asked, insisting that the matter remains an internal party affair that should not attract undue external interference.
The discussion on Ikulcha with Kwesi E. Baako highlighted the broader debate about internal democracy, discipline, and free speech within political parties. For Obiri Boahen, however, the bottom line remains clear: enforcing party rules is not persecution, but a necessary step to maintain order and cohesion within the NPP.
