NDC Not Done Yet, EC Boss May Be Next – Prof. Agyeman-Duah Alleges

The chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, and her two deputies, Dr. Eric Bossman Asare and Samuel Tettey, may be the next prominent officials to be dismissed from office, according to former UN Senior Governance Adviser Prof. Baffour Agyeman-Duah.

According to Prof. Agyeman-Duah, a petition has already been sent to President John Dramani Mahama, marking the start of a procedure that could result in the removal of the EC leadership.

In fact, yesterday [Tuesday], we were told that the NDC has not finished yet in terms of the people they intend to remove, and I guess it will be the Electoral Commissioners. I think a petition has already been sent to the President,” he disclosed.

According to the governance expert, such actions run the risk of politicizing institutions that ought to maintain their neutrality in order to protect Ghana’s democratic stability.

“You don’t have to politicise certain key institutions of governance so the people can continuously have trust and believe in the role that they play in a democracy,” he cautioned in an interview on JoyNews’ AM Show on Wednesday, September 3.

His remarks follow Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkonoo’s quick removal from office by President John Dramani Mahama a few days prior.

The Presidency said that the decision was made in accordance with Article 146(9) of the 1992 Constitution, which requires the President to act upon the recommendations of a committee established under Article 146, in a statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Spokesperson to the President.”
