President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his commitment to Ghana’s two-term limit, saying that he will be better able to enforce fiscal restraint and stop the recurring election-year spending that has fueled cyclical economic crises if he is not on the ballot in 2028.
During a three-day state visit, President Mahama met bilaterally with Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and denounced the habit of incumbent governments evading fiscal safeguards in order to win over voters.
“I will not be a candidate in the next elections, so I can hold the line when it comes to fiscal discipline,” he emphasized in his commitment to maintain the line ahead of the 2028 polls.
He also outlined the accomplishments of his administration since he returned to power after winning a landslide victory in the 2024 elections, pointing to sharp drops in interest rates and inflation as well as a notable increase in the value of the cedi.
Mahama’s statements go counter to assertions made by opposition New Patriotic Party members that he plans to run for a third term following his current and final term.
Economic cooperation and investment were the main topics of the bilateral discussions in Singapore.
