I Don’t Have Too Much Respect For the Grammys – Kwesi E Baako Cautions Ghanaian Musicians Against Losing Originality For Grammy Recognition

Media personality and cultural critic Kwesi E Baako has added his voice to the conversation in the Ghanaian music space expressing his thoughts on the growing obsession with international awards, particularly the Grammys.

Speaking on his show on iKulcha TV, Baako stated bluntly,  “I don’t have too much respect for the Grammys, emphasizing that while global recognition is valuable, it should not come at the expense of Ghanaian musical identity.

According to Baako, many local artists are beginning to alter their sound, language, and image to align with Western trends in hopes of securing nominations or collaborations that might boost their chances at Grammy attention. He cautioned that this mindset undermines the rich originality and cultural depth that make Ghanaian music unique.

He encouraged artists to continue building authentic, locally rooted sounds that can still resonate internationally. Citing examples of musicians who have found success while staying true to their cultural essence, Baako reminded the industry that originality often speaks louder than imitation.
