Dr. Kwadwo Oppong Wadie Urges Ghana to Extend Humanitarian Support to War-Torn Sudan After Donating Cocoa Products To Palestine

Dr. Kwadwo Oppong Wadie commended the government’s recent donation of 40 metric tonnes of cocoa products to Palestine, describing it as a “landmark act of solidarity.” However, he also issued a compelling call for Ghana to extend similar humanitarian assistance to Sudan, a country still grappling with the devastating impacts of civil war and humanitarian collapse.

Sudan has been in turmoil since April 2023, when a brutal conflict erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The war has killed thousands and displaced millions. International humanitarian agencies have warned of a looming famine, mass child malnutrition, and the collapse of healthcare infrastructure.

He noted that while global attention often focuses on Middle Eastern conflicts, African crises are frequently underreported and underfunded.

Dr. Wadie referred to cocoa, the symbol of Ghana’s economic and cultural identity, as more than just a commodity.

He suggested that just as Ghana donated Golden Tree chocolate and cocoa products to Palestinian civilians affected by conflict, a similar gesture toward refugees in Sudanese camps or communities affected by famine would send a strong message of Pan-African solidarity.

Highlighting Ghana’s legacy in African diplomacy and peacebuilding, from Kwame Nkrumah’s Pan-Africanist vision to ECOWAS peacekeeping missions, Dr. Wadie believes now is the time for Ghana to lead a humanitarian awakening across the continent.
