Following the Prisons Service Council’s proposal, in collaboration with the Council of State, and in compliance with Article 72(1) of the 1992 Constitution, President John Dramani Mahama has granted amnesty to 998 convicts nationwide.
The ruling is in line with the President’s constitutional authority to show mercy in circumstances that merit it. 998 of the 1,014 prisoners who were recommended for amnesty were granted it.
Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister of Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, acknowledged the decision, stating that the amnesty was given in accordance with humanitarian concerns and initiatives to relieve jail overcrowding in the nation.
