Dr Gordon Newlove Asamoah, has backed the decision to restore road tolls in Ghana, stating that it was not prudent for a developing country like Ghana to abolish the levy.
Speaking on iKulcha TV and Radio Kulcha during a discussion with host Kwesi E Baako, Dr. Asamoah argued that the earlier decision by the erstwhile New Patriotic Party (NPP) government to abolish road tolls deprived the country of an important source of revenue.
According to him, road tolls are a common practice in many countries and provide governments with funds to maintain and improve road infrastructure.
He said it did not make economic sense for a country with limited resources like Ghana to remove such a revenue stream.
Dr. Asamoah therefore described the move by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to restore the road toll system as a step in the right direction.
He added that if properly managed, the revenue generated from road tolls could significantly contribute to the development and maintenance of the nation’s road network.
