A Lot Of The Dissatisfaction That Caused Ghanaians To Vote Out NPP Happened After 2020 – Dr. John Osae‑Kwapong on Mahama’s Return

Dr. John Osae‑Kwapong, a political analyst in his book about the president, examines not only the trajectory that brought John Dramani Mahama back to the presidency in 2024, but also what shifted in public sentiment during the period after 2020.

Dr. Osae‑Kwapong avers that while there were long‑standing criticisms of Mahama’s first term — including power outages, economic instability, and corruption scandals, a new wave of dissatisfaction emerged in the post‑2020 years that proved decisive.

Speaking on Kulcha Radio/TV, he said there was growing discontent with government performance and rising perceptions of institutional corruption. These did not hinge only on past failures but on what many Ghanaians saw as insufficient progress during the NPP’s time in office following 2020.

Dr. Osae‑Kwapong’s book portrays Mahama’s candidacy in 2024 as not merely a political comeback, but a quest to redeem his reputation in the eyes of the electorate, especially after being defeated in 2016 and the perceived failure of NPP’s governance (as viewed by some) during its later years.

By 2024, Dr. Osae‑Kwapong suggests, the “playing field”, in terms of public mood, issue salience, economic pressures, and expectations, had shifted enough that the NDC’s message of change resonated more strongly. In sum, the dissatisfaction that voters felt had sharpened after 2020, making the NPP more vulnerable than in previous cycles.
