You may not have heard of Elis Koina yet and don’t kick yourself for it. This expressive singer is Ghana’s latest best kept secret… and she is ready to take on every dance hall in your city! And she comes with variety; Afro dancehall, Jazz, Afro beat and Afro soul.

Christened Joyce Adjo Amuzu, Elis grew up in Dansoman, Accra where she discovered at a pretty early age that she hada talent for music. She fell in love with the songs she heard on the radio. She particularly liked Samini’s music and started crafting her own lyrics after that fashion.

  1. she started out her musical journey as a session backing vocalist. She was also recruited to do voice overs and jingles by advertising agencies and recording studios in Accra. She did this for a while, building a wealth of experience in the process.

“I started out at King One Studios. He groomed me. He was managing an artist called Scatta Badda who was doing reggae dancehall”, Elis told our Entertainment desk. “At a point they wanted me to start speaking Patois, which I could clearly understand but was not fluent in”

In the year 2014 she was asked by the President of Big Nash Music for a demo of her music. After listening to her song, he was not only impressed but discovered enough talent for him to encourage her to play with a live band. Big Nash also got Abrewa Nana involved in transitioneing the young talent into a confident soulful stage presence.

I had feelings for reggae, dancehall and lovers rock like one does for a boyfriend” she says.

After parting ways with King One and Scatta Badda, she went on the advice of Big Nash and started singing with a list of bands including the Deep wave band, The Gees band, The Piano band, Blue jackets band and the Clogsag band.

Elis Koina is currently signed to 1st Page Music and managed by Godzy Music.
