Churches Join Fight Against ‘Galamsey’ In The Ashanti Region

Heads of churches in the Ashanti region have resolved to assist the government in the ongoing fight against illegal mining locally referred to as galamsey.

The Christian group says it cannot keep mute on the issue because their silence against the menace emboldens  the accomplices.

Addressing the media in the Ashanti region Tuesday, Right Reverend Professor Osei Sarfo Kantanka, the  immediate Past Bishop of the Methodist Church of Ghana,  said it is the civil responsibility of the church to join the fight.

According to the Christian community, the church cannot tolerate the selfish ambitions of the individuals and groups  destroying Ghana’s natural resources.

He further indicated that the galamsey menace is causing wanton destruction to properties  including cocoa farms and the various water bodies  in the country, adding the cost of damage cannot be quantified in monetary terms.  He said the number of deaths associated with galamsey ranges between 200 and 400 persons annually.

The Right Reverend also lamented the use of chemicals and its resultant effect on the water bodies.  He urged the government not to relent in the fight against galamsey.
