Ashanti Region Records 213 Fire Outbreaks In January 2016

The Ashanti Region has recorded about 213 cases of fire outbreaks within January 2016 alone displacing more than 150, 000 residents.

The Ashanti Regional Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service Semekor Kwaku Fiadzo who disclosed this during an exercise to sensitize residents on latest measures adopted to curb more fire outbreaks in the region, blamed the increasing numbers to the prolonged harmattan weather.

He hinted that his outfit has begun series of fire fighting and safety education measures within most parts of the region as part of a strategy to control the situation.fire service

According to him, the 213 fire outbreaks recorded within the first month of 2016, were made up of domestic, market and bush fires which caused extensive damage to both public and private property.

He decried the increasing cases of fire outbreaks in the region indicating that it poses a major threat to national security.

The Fire Boss said residents are failing to adhere to safety standards reasons these fires have been recorded in the region.

“We will embark on a door to door campaign to educate residents on fire fighting tactics to save the situation”, he indicated

“People are not adhering to safety standards. We tell them what to do and what not to do but they fail to listen and that is causing some of these fires. We will inaugurate a market fire task force that will help in fire prevention”, he added
