Pneumococcal Meningitis kills 6 In Ashanti Region

Six (6) persons have been confirmed dead in the Ashanti Region following an outbreak of Pneumococcal Meningitis in the country a couple of weeks ago.

The confirmed number of deaths is out of a total of 17 suspected cases of the new strain of the disease reported by health officials in the Offinso Municipal, Adansi North, Adansi South and Ejisu-Juabeng Districts all in the Ashanti Region.

Dr. Fred Adomoko Boateng, Deputy Director in Charge of Clinical Care of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) at a press conference in Kumasi, said 9 out of the total suspected cases have also been confirmed to be Pneumococcal Meningitis.

According to him, the Regional Health Directorate has stepped up measures in the region to contain the situation from further escalating.

Since the outbreak of meningitis this year, over 100 persons have been infected with 32 deaths.

Parts of Brong Ahafo, Ashanti and Northern Regions have identified as the worse hit areas.
