More than fifty workers of the National Disaster Management Organization, NADMO, from across the country, have picketed at the Ministry of Finance office in Accra to protest against non-payment of salaries.

The agitated workers say they have not been paid for about two years. Others said they have also not received a penny in the past three years.

According to them, they have been promised on numerous occasions but the Ministry of Finance is yet to redeem any of those pledges, hence their decision to mass up at the premises of the Finance Ministry Tuesday morning.

The Chief Director of the Ministry who was forced to meet the workers told their leaders efforts are being made to complete the necessary financial clearance for payment to pay them in about a month’s time.

But the workers say they are not convinced by the Chief Director’s promise and are contemplating whether to move towards the offices of the Controller and Accountant Generals’ Department or the Nadmo Headquarters.

The workers say claims by the Ministry that it had already worked on financial clearance for some of the workers cannot be true because none of them has been paid.

In recent times, unpaid public sector workers have not only embarked on strikes and demonstrations, but have also chosen the path of picketing at the offices of  state institutions responsible for facilitating the payment of their salaries.

Not long ago, about 91 junior doctors picketed at the premises of the Controller and Accountant Generals’ Department in their medical apparel in demand for eleven months unpaid salaries.

There was a quick intervention to forestall the protest from prolonging as the doctors were paid barely two weeks after the action.
